What is chlordiazepoxide and clidinium (Chlordinium, Clindex, Librax)?

Chlordiazepoxide is a benzodiazepine (ben-zoe-dye-AZE-eh-peen). Clidinium reduces stomach acid and decreases intestinal spasms.

Chlordiazepoxide and clidinium is a combination medicine that may be helpful in treating emotional distress caused by having a stomach disorder (such as an ulcer, irritable bowel syndrome, or intestinal infection). Chlordiazepoxide and clidinium is given together with other medications to treat these conditions.

Chlordiazepoxide and clidinium may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.

What are the possible side effects of chlordiazepoxide and clidinium (Chlordinium, Clindex, Librax)?

Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficult breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

This medicine can slow or stop your breathing, especially if you have recently used an opioid medication, alcohol, or other drugs that can slow your breathing. A person caring for you should seek emergency medical attention if you have weak or shallow breathing, if you are hard to wake up, or if you stop breathing.

Call your doctor at once if you have:

  • severe drowsiness;
  • a light-headed feeling, like you might pass out;
  • problems with balance or coordination;
  • confusion, excitement, anger, or feeling restless;
  • severe constipation;
  • painful or difficult urination;
  • restless muscle movements in your eyes, tongue, jaw, or neck;
  • fever, chills, sore throat; or
  • jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes).

The sedative effects of this medicine may last longer in older adults. Accidental falls are common in elderly patients who take benzodiazepines. Use caution to avoid falling or accidental injury.

Common side effects may include:

  • dry mouth;
  • blurred vision;
  • constipation, nausea;
  • urination problems;
  • drowsiness, dizziness;
  • rash;
  • swelling;
  • irregular menstrual periods; or
  • increased or decreased interest in sex.

What is the most important information I should know about chlordiazepoxide and clidinium (Chlordinium, Clindex, Librax)?

Chlordiazepoxide and clidinium can slow or stop your breathing, especially if you have recently used an opioid medication, alcohol, or other drugs that can slow your breathing.

MISUSE OF THIS MEDICINE CAN CAUSE ADDICTION, OVERDOSE, OR DEATH. Keep the medication in a place where others cannot get to it.

You should not use chlordiazepoxide and clidinium if you have glaucoma, an enlarged prostate, or problems with urination.

What should I discuss with my healthcare provider before taking chlordiazepoxide and clidinium (Chlordinium, Clindex, Librax)?

You should not use this medicine if you are allergic to chlordiazepoxide or clidinium, or if you have:

  • glaucoma; or
  • an enlarged prostate and problems with urination.

Tell your doctor if you have ever had:

  • eye problems;
  • urination problems;
  • problems with coordination;
  • bleeding problems;
  • liver or kidney disease;
  • depression, mental illness, or suicidal thoughts or behavior;
  • drug or alcohol addiction; or
  • if you use a narcotic (opioid) medication.

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. Chlordiazepoxide and clidinium may harm an unborn baby. Avoid taking this medicine during the first trimester of pregnancy.

If you use chlordiazepoxide and clidinium while you are pregnant, your baby could become dependent on the drug. This can cause life-threatening withdrawal symptoms in the baby after it is born. Babies born dependent on habit-forming medicine may need medical treatment for several weeks.

It may not be safe to breastfeed while using this medicine. Clidinium can slow breast milk production. Ask your doctor about any risk.

Chlordiazepoxide and clidinium is not approved for use by anyone younger than 18 years old.

How should I take chlordiazepoxide and clidinium (Chlordinium, Clindex, Librax)?

Follow all directions on your prescription label and read all medication guides or instruction sheets. Your doctor may occasionally change your dose. Use the medicine exactly as directed.

Never share this medicine with another person, especially someone with a history of drug abuse or addiction. MISUSE CAN CAUSE ADDICTION, OVERDOSE, OR DEATH. Keep the medication in a place where others cannot get to it. Selling or giving away this medicine is against the law.

Chlordiazepoxide and clidinium is usually taken before meals and at bedtime. Follow your doctor's instructions.

Call your doctor if your symptoms do not improve, or if they get worse.

Do not stop using this medicine suddenly, or you could have unpleasant withdrawal symptoms. Follow your doctor's instructions about tapering your dose.

Store at room temperature away from moisture and heat. Keep track of your medicine. You should be aware if anyone is using it improperly or without a prescription.

What happens if I miss a dose (Chlordinium, Clindex, Librax)?

Take the medicine as soon as you can, but skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next dose. Do not take two doses at one time.

What happens if I overdose (Chlordinium, Clindex, Librax)?

Seek emergency medical attention or call the Poison Help line at 1-800-222-1222.

Overdose symptoms may include drowsiness, confusion, muscle weakness, or coma.

What should I avoid while taking chlordiazepoxide and clidinium (Chlordinium, Clindex, Librax)?

Do not drink alcohol. Dangerous side effects or death could occur.

Avoid driving or hazardous activity until you know how this medicine will affect you. Dizziness or drowsiness can cause falls, accidents, or severe injuries.

What other drugs will affect chlordiazepoxide and clidinium (Chlordinium, Clindex, Librax)?

Taking this medicine with other drugs that make you sleepy or slow your breathing can cause dangerous side effects or death. Ask your doctor before using opioid medication, a sleeping pill, a muscle relaxer, prescription cough medicine, or medicine for depression or seizures.

Tell your doctor about all your other medicines, especially:

  • a blood thinner--warfarin, Coumadin, Jantoven;
  • medicine to treat a psychiatric disorder--chlorpromazine, fluphenazine, perphenazine, prochlorperazine, promethazine, thioridazine, trifluoperazine; or
  • an MAO inhibitor--isocarboxazid, linezolid, methylene blue injection, phenelzine, rasagiline, selegiline, tranylcypromine, and others.
