    What is posaconazole (Noxafil)?

    Posaconazole is an antifungal medicine.

    Posaconazole is used to prevent fungal infections in people who have a weak immune system resulting from certain treatments or conditions (such as chemotherapy, stem cell transplantation, graft-versus-host disease, and others).

    Posaconazole oral suspension (liquid) is also used to treat oral thrush (yeast infection of the mouth).

    Posaconazole may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.

    What are the possible side effects of posaconazole (Noxafil)?

    Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

    Call your doctor at once if you have:

    • fast or pounding heartbeats, fluttering in your chest, shortness of breath, and sudden dizziness (like you might pass out);
    • swelling in an arm or leg;
    • shortness of breath;
    • liver problems--nausea, vomiting, itching, feeling tired, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes); or
    • symptoms of an electrolyte imbalance--leg cramps, constipation, dizziness, irregular heartbeats, increased thirst or urination, feeling jittery, muscle spasms or contractions, muscle weakness, numbness or tingling, cough or choking feeling.

    Tell your doctor about all your current medicines and any you start or stop using. Many drugs can interact, and some drugs should not be used together.

    What should I discuss with my healthcare provider before using posaconazole (Noxafil)?

    You should not use this medicine if you are allergic to posaconazole or similar antifungals such as fluconazole, itraconazole, ketoconazole, or voriconazole.

    Some medicines can cause unwanted or dangerous effects when used with posaconazole. Your doctor may change your treatment plan if you also use:

    • cyclosporine;
    • pimozide;
    • quinidine;
    • sirolimus, tacrolimus;
    • cholesterol lowering medicines--atorvastatin, lovastatin, or simvastatin; or
    • ergot medicine--dihydroergotamine, ergotamine, ergonovine, or methylergonovine.

    Tell your doctor if you have ever had:

    Posaconazole may harm an unborn baby. Use effective birth control to prevent pregnancy, and tell your doctor if you become pregnant.

    You should not breast-feed while using posaconazole.

    Posaconazole oral is not approved for use by anyone younger than 13 years old. Posaconazole injection is for use only in adults.

    How should I use posaconazole (Noxafil)?

    Follow all directions on your prescription label and read all medication guides or instruction sheets. Use the medicine exactly as directed.

    Posaconazole oral is taken by mouth.

    The oral liquid and tablet forms of posaconazole are not equivalent and may not have the same dose or schedule. Ask your pharmacist if you have any questions about the kind of posaconazole you receive at the pharmacy.

    Posaconazole injection is given as an infusion into a vein. A healthcare provider will give your first dose and may teach you how to properly use the medication by yourself.

    The injection must be given slowly, and the infusion can take up to 90 minutes to complete.

    Read and carefully follow any Instructions for Use provided with your medicine. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you do not understand these instructions.

    Take the tablet with food. Take the oral suspension with food or within 20 minutes after a full meal. If you cannot eat a full meal, take the oral suspension with a nutritional supplement or an acidic carbonated drink such as ginger ale.

    Swallow the tablet whole and do not crush, chew, or break it.

    Shake the oral suspension well just before you measure a dose. Use only the dosing spoon provided with the medicine. Rinse the spoon with water after each use.

    Use this medicine for the full prescribed length of time, even if your symptoms quickly improve. Skipping doses can increase your risk of infection that is resistant to medication. Posaconazole will not treat a viral infection such as the flu or a common cold.

    Call your doctor if you have ongoing vomiting or diarrhea. Posaconazole may not work as well while during this time.

    You may need frequent medical tests.

    Store posaconazole oral liquid or tablets at room temperature away from moisture and heat. Do not freeze.

    Store posaconazole injection in the refrigerator, do not freeze.

    Use a needle and syringe only once and then place them in a puncture-proof "sharps" container. Follow state or local laws about how to dispose of this container. Keep it out of the reach of children and pets.

    What happens if I miss a dose (Noxafil)?

    Use the medicine as soon as you can, but skip the missed dose if your next dose is due in less than 12 hours. Do not use two doses at one time.

    What happens if I overdose (Noxafil)?

    Seek emergency medical attention or call the Poison Help line at 1-800-222-1222.

    What should I avoid while using posaconazole (Noxafil)?

    Follow your doctor's instructions about any restrictions on food, beverages, or activity.

    What other drugs will affect posaconazole (Noxafil)?

    Posaconazole can cause a serious heart problem. Your risk may be higher if you also use certain other medicines for infections, asthma, heart problems, high blood pressure, depression, mental illness, cancer, malaria, or HIV.

    Sometimes it is not safe to use certain medications at the same time. Some drugs can affect your blood levels of other drugs you take, which may increase side effects or make the medications less effective.

    Many drugs can affect posaconazole, and some drugs should not be used at the same time. Tell your doctor about all your current medicines and any medicine you start or stop using. This includes prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products. Not all possible interactions are listed here.
