Paregoric Side Effects Center
Paregoric (anhydrous morphine) is a narcotic used to treat diarrhea. Common side effects of Paregoric include:
- lightheadedness,
- dizziness,
- drowsiness,
- tiredness,
- restlessness,
- nausea,
- vomiting,
- upset stomach,
- loss of appetite,
- constipation,
- increased sweating, or
- flushing (warmth, redness, or tingly feeling under your skin).
Tell your doctor if you have serious side effects of Paregoric including:
- severe constipation, bloating, stomach cramps;
- urinating less than usual or not at all;
- fast, pounding, or uneven heartbeats;
- feeling like you might pass out;
- weak or shallow breathing; or
- seizures (convulsions).
The usual adult dosage of Paregoric is 5 to 10 mL (1 to 2 tsp) 1 to 4 times a day. The usual pediatric dosage is 0.25 to 0.5 mL/kg of body weight 1 to 4 times a day. Paregoric may interact with other narcotics, general anesthetics, phenothiazines, tranquilizers, sedative/hypnotics, or other CNS depressants. Tell your doctor all medications and supplements you use. During pregnancy, Paregoric should be used only if prescribed. This drug passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding. Withdrawal symptoms may occur if you suddenly stop taking this medication.

Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
Stop using opium preparation and call your doctor at once if you have:
- weak or shallow breathing;
- a light-headed feeling, like you might pass out; or
- low blood sugar--headache, hunger, sweating, irritability, dizziness, fast heart rate, and feeling anxious or shaky.
Serious breathing problems may be more likely in older adults and in those who are debilitated or have wasting syndrome or chronic breathing disorders.
Common side effects may include:
- nausea, vomiting;
- constipation; or
- itching, rash.

SIDE EFFECTS
The most frequent adverse reactions include lightheadedness, dizziness, sedation, nausea, and vomiting. These effects seem to be more prominent in ambulatory than in nonambulatory patients, and some of these adverse reactions may be alleviated if the patient lies down.
Other adverse reactions include euphoria, dysphoria, constipation, and pruritus.
DRUG ABUSE AND DEPENDENCE
Controlled Substance:
Paregoric (anhydrous morphine) is a Schedule III narcotic.
Dependence:
Morphine can produce drug dependence and therefore has the potential for being abused. Patients receiving therapeutic dosage regimens of 10 mg every 4 hours for 1 to 2 weeks have exhibited mild withdrawal symptoms. Development of the dependent state is recognizable by an increased tolerance to the analgesic effect and the appearance of purposive phenomena (complaints, pleas, demands, or manipulative actions) shortly before the time of the next scheduled dose. A patient in withdrawal should be treated in a hospital environment. Usually, it is necessary only to provide supportive care with administration of a tranquilizer to suppress anxiety. Severe symptoms of withdrawal may require administration of a replacement narcotic.
