What Is Klor-Con?

Klor-Con (potassium chloride) Extended-release Tablets is a mineral used to prevent or to treat low blood levels of potassium (hypokalemia). Potassium levels can be low as a result of a disease or from taking certain medicines, or after a prolonged illness with diarrhea or vomiting.

What Are Side Effects of Klor-Con?

Common side effects of Klor-Con include:

• stomach pain/upset,
• nausea,
• vomiting,
• diarrhea,
• tingling in the hands or feet, or
• appearance of a potassium chloride tablet in your stool.

Tell your doctor if you experience serious side effects of Klor-Con including:

• difficult or painful swallowing, or
• feeling as if the capsule/tablet is stuck in your throat.

Dosage for Klor-Con

The dose of Klor-Con for the prevention of hypokalemia is typically in the range of 20 mEq per day. Doses of 40-100 mEq per day or more are used for the treatment of potassium depletion.

What Drugs, Substances, or Supplements Interact with Klor-Con?

Klor-Con may interact with eplerenone, digoxin, quinidine, bronchodilators, ACE inhibitors, or diuretics (water pills). Tell your doctor all medications and supplements you use.

Klor-Con During Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Klor-Con should be used only when prescribed during pregnancy. Potassium passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.

Klor-Con Consumer Information

Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficult breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Stop using potassium chloride and call your doctor at once if you have:

• severe throat irritation;
• chest pain, trouble breathing;
• pain, burning, bruising, swelling, irritation, or skin changes where the medicine was injected;
• stomach bloating, severe vomiting, severe stomach pain;
• high potassium level--nausea, weakness, tingly feeling, chest pain, irregular heartbeats, loss of movement; or
• signs of stomach bleeding--bloody or tarry stools, coughing up blood or vomit that looks like coffee grounds.

Common side effects may include:

• nausea, vomiting, diarrhea;
• gas, stomach pain; or
• the appearance of a potassium chloride tablet in your stool.

SIDE EFFECTS

One of the most severe adverse effects is hyperkalemia (see CONTRAINDICATIONS, WARNINGS and OVERDOSAGE). There also have been reports of upper and lower gastrointestinal conditions including obstruction, bleeding, ulceration and perforation (see CONTRAINDICATIONS and WARNINGS).

The most common adverse reactions to oral potassium salts are nausea, vomiting, flatulence, abdominal pain/discomfort and diarrhea. These symptoms are due to irritation of the gastrointestinal tract and are best managed by taking the dose with meals or reducing the amount taken at one time.

Skin rash has been reported rarely.
