What Is Isuprel?

Isuprel (isoproterenol hydrochloride) is a bronchodilator used as an inhaler to treat conditions such as asthma, bronchitis, and emphysema. In rare cases, Isuprel is given as an injection as a treatment for electrical heart block. Isuprel is available in generic form.

Common side effects of Isuprel include:

  • tremor,
  • nervousness,
  • shakiness,
  • headache,
  • nausea,
  • vomiting,
  • diarrhea,
  • heartburn,
  • lightheadedness,
  • dizziness,
  • difficulty sleeping (insomnia),
  • unusual taste in mouth,
  • sweating,
  • hoarseness,
  • flushing,
  • shortness of breath,
  • blurred vision, or
  • dry mouth or throat as your body adjusts to the medication.

Isuprel may interact with beta-blockers, tricyclic antidepressants, monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), other inhaled bronchodilators, caffeine, diet pills, or decongestants.

Isuprel Consumer Information

Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficult breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Tell your caregivers right away if you have:

  • pounding heartbeats or fluttering in your chest;
  • chest pain;
  • severe headache, pounding in your neck or ears;
  • pain when you breathe, shortness of breath, cough;
  • pale skin, cold and clammy skin, anxiety; or
  • a light-headed feeling, like you might pass out.

Common side effects may include:

  • headache, dizziness, nervousness;
  • nausea;
  • blurred vision;
  • tremors; or
  • sweating, flushing (sudden warmth, redness, or tingly feeling).

SIDE EFFECTS

The following reactions to isoproterenol hydrochloride injection have been reported:

CNS: Nervousness, headache, dizziness, nausea, visual blurring.

Cardiovascular: Tachycardia, palpitations, angina, Adams-Stokes attacks, pulmonary edema, hypertension, hypotension, ventricular arrhythmias, tachyarrhythmias.

In a few patients, presumably with organic disease of the AV node and its branches, isoproterenol hydrochloride injection has been reported to precipitate Adams-Stokes seizures during normal sinus rhythm or transient heart block.

Respiratory: Dyspnea.

Other: Flushing of the skin, sweating, mild tremors, weakness, pallor.
