Are Invega and Zyprexa the Same Thing?
Invega (paliperidone) and Zyprexa (olanzapine) are antipsychotic medications used to treat schizophrenia.
Zyprexa is also used to treat manic episodes of bipolar disorder.
Side effects of Invega and Zyprexa that are similar include drowsiness, dizziness, headache, lightheadedness, abdominal/stomach pain, upset stomach, weight gain, dry mouth, breast swelling or
discharge, changes in menstrual periods, or restlessness.
Side effects of Invega that are different from Zyprexa include nausea, cough, shaking (tremors), blurred vision, decreased sex drive, impotence, or difficulty having an orgasm.
Side effects of Zyprexa that are different from Invega include akathisia (an inability to sit still), constipation, tiredness, increased appetite, memory problems, loss of bladder control, back pain, pain in your arms or legs, or numbness or tingly feeling.
Both Invega and Zyprexa may interact with other medicines that can make you sleepy or slow your breathing (such as cold or allergy medicines, narcotic pain medicines, sleeping pills, muscle relaxers, and medicines for seizures, depression, or anxiety), blood pressure medications, or medications to treat Parkinson's disease.
Invega may also interact with arsenic trioxide, droperidol, anti-anxiety medications, antibiotics, anti-malaria medications, heart rhythm medicine, medicine to prevent or treat nausea and vomiting, medicines to treat Parkinson's disease, medicines to treat psychiatric disorders, or migraine headache medicines.
Zyprexa may also interact with heart medications, carbamazepine, diazepam, olanzapine, omeprazole, or rifampin.
What Are Possible Side Effects of Invega?
Common side effects of Invega include:
- drowsiness,
- dizziness,
- headache,
- lightheadedness,
- abdominal/stomach pain,
- upset stomach,
- nausea,
- weight gain,
- cough,
- dry mouth,
- breast swelling or discharge,
- changes in menstrual periods,
- restlessness,
- shaking (tremor),
- blurred vision,
- decreased sex drive,
- impotence, or
- difficulty having an orgasm.
Tell your doctor if you have serious side effects of Invega including:
- difficulty swallowing,
- muscle spasms,
- mental/mood changes, or
- signs of infection (such as fever, persistent sore throat),
- high fever,
- sweating,
- confusion,
- fast or uneven heartbeats,
- feeling like you might pass out,
- tremors (uncontrolled shaking),
- trouble swallowing,
- sudden numbness or weakness, especially on one side of the body,
- sudden and severe headache, or problems with vision, speech, or balance,
- fever, chills, body aches, flu symptoms, or
- white patches or sores inside your mouth or on your lips.

Common side effects of Zyprexa include:

What Is Invega?
Invega (paliperidone) extended-release tablets are indicated for the treatment of schizophrenia in adults and adolescents (12-17 years of age)
What Is Zyprexa?
Zyprexa (olanzapine) is an atypical antipsychotic medication used to treat schizophrenia and manic episodes of bipolar disorder.
What Drugs Interact With Invega?
If you are taking, or plan to take, any prescription or over-the-counter drugs, as there is a potential for interactions.
Do not drink alcohol while taking Invega.
What Drugs Interact With Zyprexa?
Zyprexa may interact with other medicines that make you sleepy (such as cold or allergy medicine, sedatives, narcotic pain medicine, sleeping pills, muscle relaxers, and medicine for seizures, depression, or anxiety), heart or blood pressure medications, medications to treat Parkinson's disease, seizure medications.
Zyprexa may also interact with omeprazole or rifampin.
How Should Invega Be Taken?
Invega should be taken with water. Tablets should not be chewed, divided, or crushed.
How Should Zyprexa Be Taken?
Oral Zyprexa should be administered on a once-a-day schedule without regard to meals, generally beginning with a 5 to 10 mg initial dose, with a target dose of 10 mg/day within several days.
