Trintellix (vortioxetine) and Effexor (venlafaxine) are used to treat major depressive disorder (MDD).

Trintellix and Effexor are different types of antidepressants. Trintellix is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) and Effexor is a selective serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SNRI).

Side effects of Trintellix and Effexor that are similar include nausea, dry mouth, constipation, dizziness, abnormal dreams, and decreased sexual desire.

Side effects of Trintellix that are different from Effexor include diarrhea, vomiting, gas, and itching.

Side effects of Effexor that are different from Trintellix include nervousness, headaches, anxiety, insomnia, drowsiness, increased sweating, blurred vision, changes in appetite or weight, impotence, difficulty having an orgasm, increased blood pressure, and seizures.

Both Trintellix and Effexor may interact with other antidepressants, monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), tramadol, L-tryptophan, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), triptans, warfarin, and seizure medications.

Trintellix may also interact with buspirone, aspirin, bupropion, quinidine, and rifampicin.

Effexor may also interact with alcohol, other medicines that make you sleepy (such as cold or allergy medicines, sedatives, narcotics, sleeping pills, muscle relaxers, and medicines for anxiety), cimetidine, ketoconazole, linezolid, lithium, haloperidol, and risperidone.

Withdrawal symptoms may occur if you suddenly stop taking Effexor.

Common side effects of Trintellix include:

• nausea
• diarrhea
• dry mouth
• constipation
• vomiting
• gas
• dizziness
• abnormal dreams
• itching, and
• decreased sexual desire

Antidepressants such as Trintellix increased the risk of suicidal thoughts and behavior in children, adolescents, and young adults in short-term studies. Tell your doctor if you experience any thoughts of suicide while taking Trintellix.

Common side effects of Effexor include:

• dizziness,
• nervousness,
• nausea,
• constipation,
• headaches,
• anxiety,
• insomnia,
• strange dreams,
• drowsiness,
• increased sweating,
• blurred vision,
• dry mouth,
• changes in appetite or weight,
• decreased sex drive,
• impotence,
• difficulty having an orgasm,
• increased blood pressure, and
• seizures.

Abrupt discontinuation of Effexor may cause dizziness, headache, nausea, changes in mood, or changes in the sense of smell, and taste.

Trintellix (vortioxetine) tablets are an antidepressant indicated for the treatment of major depressive disorder (MDD).

Effexor (venlafaxine) is an antidepressant used for treatment of major depression.

Trintellix may interact with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), serotonin norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs), triptans, buspirone, tramadol, tryptophan products, NSAIDs, aspirin, warfarin, bupropion, fluoxetine, paroxetine, quinidine, rifampicin, carbamazepine, and phenytoin. Tell your doctor all medications and supplements you use.

Effexor may interact with cold or allergy medicines, sedatives, narcotics, sleeping pills, muscle relaxers, medicines for seizures or anxiety, other antidepressants, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), blood thinners, cimetidine, tramadol, L-tryptophan, or medicines to treat migraines.

Effexor may also interact with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), ketoconazole, linezolid, lithium, haloperidol, or risperidone.

The recommended starting dose of Trintellix is 10 mg administered orally once daily without regard to meals. Dosage should then be increased to 20 mg/day, as tolerated.

The usual dose of Effexor is 37.5-375 mg daily.
