Potassium Acid Phosphate

Potassium acid phosphate is used to treat elevated urinary pH.

Tablet

• 500 mg

Dosage Considerations – Should be Given as Follows:

Elevated Urinary pH

• 1-2 tabs (500-1000mg) dissolved in 6-8 oz of water; take orally four times daily with meals and at bedtime

Safety and efficacy not established in pediatric patients.

Side effects of Potassium Acid Phosphate may include:

• Diarrhea
• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Stomach pain
• Gas (flatulence)
• Slow heart rate
• High blood potassium (hyperkalemia)
• Local tissue death with leakage
• Weakness
• Shortness of breath
• Low blood calcium (hypocalcemia)
• Muscle cramps and contractions
• Phosphate intoxication
• Low blood pressure (hypotension)
• Irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia)

Warnings

• This medication contains Potassium Acid Phosphate. Do not take Zydelig if you are allergic to potassium_acid_phosphate or any ingredients contained in this drug.
• Keep out of reach of children. In case of overdose, get medical help or contact a Poison Control Center immediately.

Contraindications

• Hyperphosphatemia
• severe renal impairment
• hyperkalemia,
• infected phosphate stones

Long-Term Effects

• Hemosiderosis (during long-term administration of large amounts)

Cautions

• May cause high blood potassium (hyperkalemia); use caution in patients who require regulation of serum potassium concentrations
• Patients may experience mild laxative effects within the first few days of therapy
• Use caution in patients with severe adrenal insufficiency, cardiac disease, myotonia congenita, pancreatitis, parathyroid disease, renal calculi, renal impairment, tissue breakdowns (burns), or rickets

Pregnancy and Lactation

• Use potassium acid phosphate with caution during pregnancy if the benefits outweigh the risks. Animal studies show risk and human studies are not available or neither animal nor human studies were done.
• It is not known whether potassium acid phosphate crosses into breast milk. Use caution while breastfeeding.
