Glycerin

Glycerin is used for relief of occasional constipation.

Adult and Pediatric Dosage Forms and Strengths

• 1 g
• 1.5 g
• 2 g
• 2.1 g
• 2.8 g

Dosage Considerations – Should be Given as Follows:

Constipation

Adult

• 2-2.8 g suppository, retain 15 minutes, as needed constipation

Children 2-6 years

• 1-1.7 g suppository, retain 15 minutes, as needed constipation

Children over 6 years

• 2-8 g suppository, retain 15 minutes, as needed constipation

Administration

• The patient should lie on the left side with knees bent
• Remove protective wrap before inserting
• Gently insert the tip into rectum with slight side-to-side movement (tip of suppository pointing toward navel)
• For liquid suppository, squeeze the bulb until all liquid is expelled and discard unit

Side effects associated with the use of Glycerin, include the following:

• Excessive bowel activity
• Cramping
• Rectal irritation
• Cramping rectal pain

Warnings

• This medication contains glycerin
• Do not take glycerin if you are allergic to glycerin or any ingredients contained in this drug
• Keep out of reach of children
• In case of overdose, get medical help or contact a Poison Control Center immediately

• GI obstruction, severe impaction

Cautions

• Do not use when abdominal pain, nausea, or vomiting present (unless directed by physician)
• Frequent or prolonged use of laxatives may result in independence
• Rectal bleeding or failure to have bowel movement requires physician care
• Contact a physician before use if experience a sudden change in bowel habits that last more than 2 weeks
• Do not use for longer than 1 week

Pregnancy and Lactation

• It is not known whether glycerin is excreted in breast milk; no risks have been shown to nursing infants
