What Is Silicon and How Does It Work?

Silicon is a mineral. Silicon supplements are used for weak bones (osteoporosis), heart disease and stroke (cardiovascular disease), Alzheimer's disease, hair loss, and improving hair and nail quality. It is also used for improving skin healing; and for treating sprains and strains, as well as digestive system disorders.

There is insufficient data on the efficacy of silicon.

Silicon is NOT the same as silicone. Silicone is the name of a group of materials resembling plastic that contain silicon, oxygen, and other chemicals. Silicone is used to make breast implants, medical tubing, and a variety of other medical devices.

Dosage of Silicon

There is no recommended dietary allowance (RDA) for silicon, since an essential biological role for it has not been identified.

Dosing Consideraations – Should be Given as Follows:

Dietary Supplement

Adult:

  • Adult: 5-20 mg/day, maximum 50 mg/day; up to 700 mg taken without apparent harm
  • Daily diet normally provides enough to meet requirements
  • Sources of silicon: Oats, rice, and barley; also found in fruits and vegetables
  • Pediatric: Safety and efficacy not established

What Are Side Effects Associated with Using Silicon?

There are no known side effects associated with using silicon; silicon is present in neurofibrillary tangles in Alzheimer's disease.
