Simponi (golimumab injection) and Eticovo (etanercept-ykro) are used to treat rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis.

Simponi is sometimes used with another medication called methotrexate (Rheumatrex, Trexall).

Eticovo is also used to treat polyarticular juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) in patients aged 2 years or older and plaque psoriasis in patients 4 years or older.

Simponi and Eticovo belong to different drug classes. Simponi is a human IgG1k monoclonal antibody and Eticovo is a tumor necrosis factor (TNF) blocker. Eticovo is biosimilar to Enbrel (etanercept).

Side effects of Simponi and Eticovo that are similar include injection site reactions (redness, itching, pain, or swelling).

Side effects of Simponi that are different from Eticovo include dizziness and cold symptoms (stuffy nose, sneezing, sore throat).

Side effects of Eticovo that are different from Simponi include infections (such as upper respiratory infections, nasopharyngitis, sinusitis, and influenza), diarrhea, rash, itching, fever, and hives.

Both Simponi and Eticovo may interact with abatacept and anakinra.

Simponi may also interact with other monoclonal antibodies, blood thinners, cyclosporine, digoxin, theophylline, seizure medications, or heart rhythm medications.

Eticovo may also interact with “live vaccines,” cyclophosphamide, and sulfasalazine.

Common side effects of Simponi include:

• dizziness,
• cold symptoms (stuffy nose, sneezing, sore throat), or
• injection site reactions (redness, itching, pain, or swelling).

Tell your doctor if you have serious side effects of Simponi including:

• easy bruising or bleeding,
• numbness or tingling of the hands or feet,
• unsteadiness,
• unexplained muscle weakness,
• vision changes,
• muscle or joint pain,
• butterfly-shaped rash on the nose and cheeks,
• symptoms of heart failure (including swelling ankles or feet, trouble breathing, unusual tiredness),
• signs of infection (such as fever/chills/cough/persistent sore throat, unusual sweating), or
• symptoms of liver damage (including dark urine, persistent nausea/vomiting/loss of appetite, stomach/abdominal pain, or yellow eyes or skin).

Common side effects of Eticovo include:

• infections (such as upper respiratory infections, nasopharyngitis, sinusitis, and influenza),
• injection site reactions,
• diarrhea,
• rash,
• itching,
• fever, and
• hives

Simponi works by blocking a protein (tumor necrosis factor or TNF) found in the body's immune system that causes joint swelling and damage.

Eticovo (etanercept-ykro) is a tumor necrosis factor (TNF) blocker indicated for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), polyarticular juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) in patients aged 2 years or older, psoriatic arthritis (PsA), ankylosing spondylitis (AS), and plaque psoriasis (PsO) in patients 4 years or older. Eticovo is biosimilar to Enbrel (etanercept).

Simponi may interact with abatacept, anakinra, rituximab, blood thinners, cyclosporine, digoxin, theophylline, seizure medications, or heart rhythm medications. Tell your doctor all medications you use. During pregnancy, Simponi should be used only when prescribed. It is unknown if this drug passes into breast milk. Because of the potential risk to the infant, consult your doctor before breastfeeding.

Eticovo may interact with "live vaccines," anakinra, abatacept, and cyclophosphamide, and sulfasalazine. Tell your doctor all medications and supplements you use and all vaccines you recently received. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant before using Eticovo; it is unknown how it would affect a fetus. Eticovo passes into breast milk in low levels. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.

The Simponi dose regimen is 50 mg administered by subcutaneous (SC) injection once a month.

The dose of Eticovo to treat adult rheumatoid arthritis and psoriatic arthritis is 50 mg once weekly with or without methotrexate (MTX). The dose of Eticovo to treat ankylosing spondylitis is 50 mg once weekly. The dose of Eticovo to treat adult plaque psoriasis is 50 mg twice weekly for 3 months, followed by 50 mg once weekly. The dose of Eticovo to treat pediatric plaque psoriasis or plaque psoriasis (patients who weigh 63 kg or more) is 50 mg once weekly.
