Are Emgality and Zomig the Same Thing?

Emgality (galcanezumab-gnlm) and Zomig (zolmitriptan) Nasal Spray are indicated for the treatment of migraine in adults.

Emgality and Zomig belong to different drug classes. Emgality is a calcitonin-gene related peptide antagonist and Zomig is a selective serotonin receptor agonist (a "triptan").

Side effects of Emgality that are different from Zomig Nasal Spray include injection site reactions (such as pain, redness, and itching).

Side effects of Zomig Nasal Spray that are different from Emgality include unusual or unpleasant taste in your mouth, discomfort in the nose or throat after using the nasal spray, flushing (warmth, redness, tingling, numbness under the skin), nausea, dry mouth, weakness, drowsiness, dizziness, and pressure or heavy feeling in any part of your body.

Emgality may interact with other drugs.

Zomig Nasal Spray may interact with other migraine headache medicines, cimetidine, medicines to treat depression or a psychiatric disorder, narcotics, and medicines to prevent nausea and vomiting.

What Are Possible Side Effects of Zomig?

Common side effects of Zomig include:

  • unusual or unpleasant taste in your mouth,
  • discomfort in the nose or throat after using the nasal spray,
  • warmth/redness/tingling/numbness under the skin,
  • nausea,
  • dry mouth,
  • weakness,
  • drowsiness,
  • dizziness, or
  • pressure or heavy feeling in any part of your body

What Is Emgality?

Emgality (galcanezumab-gnlm) is a calcitonin-gene related peptide antagonist indicated for the preventive treatment of migraine in adults.

What Is Zomig?

Zomig (zolmitriptan) Nasal Spray is a headache medicine that narrows blood vessels around the brain used to treat migraine headaches. Zomig Nasal Spray will only treat a headache that has already begun. Zomig Nasal Spray will not prevent headaches or reduce the number of attacks.

 

What Drugs Interact With Emgality?

Emgality may interact with other drugs. Tell your doctor all medications and supplements you use.

What Drugs Interact With Zomig?

Zomig may interact with other migraine headache medicines, cimetidine, or antidepressants. Tell your doctor all medications you are taking. During pregnancy, Zomig should be used only when prescribed. It is unknown if this drug passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

Zomig may also interact with alcohol, oral contraceptives, and carbonic anhydrase inhibitors.

 

How Should Emgality Be Taken?

The recommended dosage of Emgality is a 240 mg loading dose (administered as two consecutive injections of 120 mg each), followed by monthly doses of 120 mg.

How Should Zomig Be Taken?

The initial dose of Zomig is 2.5 mg or less. The dose can be repeated after 2 hours if symptoms persist. The maximum dose is 10 mg per day.
