Are Doryx and Accutane the Same Thing?

Doryx MPC (doxycycline hyclate delayed-release tablets) and Accutane (isotretinoin) are used to treat acne.

Doryx MPC is also used to treat rickettsial infections, sexually transmitted infections, respiratory tract infections, specific bacterial infections, ophthalmic infections, anthrax [including inhalational anthrax (post-exposure)], alternative treatment for selected infections when penicillin is contraindicated, adjunctive therapy in acute intestinal amebiasis, and prophylaxis of malaria.

Doryx and Accutane belong to different drug classes. Doryx MPC is a tetracycline antibiotic and Accutane is a retinoid.

What is Accutane?

Accutane (isotretinoin) is a retinoid used for the treatment and prevention of severe acne. The brand name Accutane is discontinued in the U.S., but generic formulations are available.

 

What Drugs Interact With Doryx?

Administration of botulinum toxin with other agents (for example, aminoglycosides, curare) that affect neuromuscular function may increase the effect of botulinum toxin.

What Drugs Interact With Accutane?

Accutane may interact with steroids, seizure medications, or tetracycline antibiotics

 

How Should Doryx Be Taken?

The usual dosage of Doryx MPC is 240 mg on the first day of treatment (administered 120 mg every 12 hours) followed by a maintenance dose of 120 mg daily.

The recommended dose of Accutane is 0.5 to 2 mg per kg of body weight daily.
