What Is Accutane?

Accutane (isotretinoin) is a retinoid used for the treatment and prevention of severe acne. The brand name Accutane is discontinued in the U.S., but generic formulations are available.

What Are Side Effects of Accutane?

The most common side effects of Accutane are:

  • dry skin, itching, or rash;
  • dry nose or nosebleeds;
  • cracks in the corners of the mouth, dry lips, or dry mouth;
  • cracking or peeling skin;
  • inflammation of the whites of the eyes or dry eyes;
  • joint, back, or muscle pain;
  • dizziness, drowsiness, or nervousness; and
  • changes in your fingernails or toenails.

Accutane may cause serious side effects including:

  • hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat;
  • red or purple skin rash with blistering and peeling;
  • problems with your vision or hearing, or pain behind your eyes;
  • hallucinations or unusual mood changes (such as crying spells or thoughts of self-harm);
  • upper stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, or yellowing of the skin/eyes (jaundice);
  • severe stomach or chest pain, diarrhea, or rectal bleeding; and
  • increased thirst or urination.

Get medical help right away if you have any of the symptoms listed above.

Dosage for Accutane

The recommended dose of Accutane is 0.5 to 2 mg per kg of body weight daily.

What Drugs, Substances, or Supplements Interact with Accutane?

Accutane may interact with steroids, seizure medications, or tetracycline antibiotics. Combining vitamin A with Accutane may increase side effects. Tell your doctor all medications and supplements you use.

Accutane During Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Accutane is harmful to the fetus and therefore must not be used during pregnancy. It is unknown if Accutane passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.
