Hypoparathyroidism

Hypoparathyroidism is a condition in which the parathyroid glands produce too little levels of hormone known as parathormone. This in turn leads to an abnormal lowering of calcium levels in the blood.

Signs and symptoms of hypoparathyroidism include

  • tingling or burning in the fingertips, toes, and lips;
  • muscle aches or cramps in the legs, feet, stomach, or face;
  • muscle twitching or spasms particularly around the mouth; and
  • fatigue or weakness.

Other associated signs and symptoms can include

  • patchy hair loss,
  • dry, coarse skin,
  • brittle nails,
  • memory loss,
  • tooth problems, and
  • cataracts of the eyes.

Causes of hypoparathyroidism

Hypoparathyroidism has several different causes. It may be caused by a birth defect, an autoimmune disease, or due to removal of the parathyroid glands during thyroid surgery.
