Amebiasis (Entamoeba histolytica Infection)

Amebiasis is an infection with a protozoan parasite known as Entamoeba histolytica (E. histolytica). In some people, the infection can lead to symptoms of dysentery (diarrhea with blood).

Only 10%-20% of infected people will show symptoms and signs. When symptoms and signs occur, these can include

• diarrhea or loose stools with blood in the stool,
• fever,
• abdominal pain or cramping,
• loss of appetite, and
• weight loss.

Other associated symptoms can include

• flatulence (passing gas) or
• fatigue.

Causes of amebiasis

The infection spreads by consuming contaminated food or water, association with food handlers whose hands are contaminated, or contact with contaminated medical devices such as colonic irrigation devices. Amebiasis is contagious and can spread from person to person.

• Abdominal Cramping or Pain
• Bloody, Watery Stools
• Diarrhea
• Fatigue
• Fever
• Flatulence
• Loss of Appetite
• Watery Stools
• Weight Loss
