Amebiasis (Entamoeba histolytica Infection)

Amebiasis is an infection with a protozoan parasite known as Entamoeba histolytica (E. histolytica). In some people, the infection can lead to symptoms of dysentery (diarrhea with blood).

Causes of amebiasis

The infection spreads by consuming contaminated food or water, association with food handlers whose hands are contaminated, or contact with contaminated medical devices such as colonic irrigation devices. Amebiasis is contagious and can spread from person to person.
