Tussionex (chlorpheniramine and hydrocodone) and Hycodan (hydrocodone bitartrate and homatropine methylbromide) are combinations that include narcotic cough medicines used to treat cough.

Tussionex is combined with an antihistamine and is also used to manage cold and allergy symptoms.

Hycodan is combined with an anticholinergic medicine that works against the narcotic to prevent an overdose.

Common side effects of Tussionex include:

• lightheadedness,
• dizziness,
• drowsiness,
• trouble concentrating,
• mood changes,
• anxiety,
• blurred vision,
• constipation,
• nausea,
• vomiting,
• loss of appetite,
• dry mouth or throat,
• sweating,
• itching or skin rash, and
• disturbed coordination.

Contact your doctor if you have serious side effects of Tussionex including:

• shallow breathing,
• chest tightness,
• painful or difficult urination,
• mental/mood changes (such as depression, agitation, confusion, hallucinations),
• stomach/abdominal pain,
• fast/slow/irregular heartbeat, or
• unusual behavior.

Common side effects of Hycodan include:

• nausea due to the use of hydrocodone, which usually goes away after the first few doses.

Other side effects of Hycodan include:

• lightheadedness,
• dizziness,
• drowsiness,
• vision changes,
• trouble concentrating,
• vomiting,
• constipation, or
• skin itching or rash.

Tell your doctor if you have serious side effects of Hycodan including:

• stomach or abdominal pain,
• mental/mood changes (such as agitation, confusion, hallucinations), or
• difficult or painful urination.

Tussionex (chlorpheniramine and hydrocodone) is a combination antihistamine/antitussive drug prescribed for symptomatically managing cold and allergy symptoms.

Hycodan (hydrocodone bitartrate and homatropine methylbromide) is a combination of a narcotic cough medicine and a medicine that works against the narcotic to prevent an overdose used to treat cough.

Tussionex may interact with other drugs that can cause sleepiness (narcotics, sleeping pills, muscle relaxers, and medicine for seizures, depression or anxiety), any other cold or allergy medicines, atropine, benztropine, dimenhydrinate, methscopolamine, scopolamine, bronchodilators, glycopyrrolate, mepenzolate, bladder or urinary medications, irritable bowel medications, or MAO inhibitors. Tell your doctor all medications and supplements you use.

Hycodan may interact with other medicines that make you sleepy (such as cold or allergy medicine, sedatives, narcotic pain medicine, sleeping pills, muscle relaxers, and medicine for seizures, depression, or anxiety). Tell your doctor all medications you use.

Tussionex usual dose is 5 ml twice a day.

The dose of Hycodan for adults and children 12 years and older is one tablet or 5 mL (1 tsp) of the oral solution every 4 to 6 hours as needed; do not exceed six tablets or 30 mL (6 tsp) in 24 hours. Consult your doctor for pediatric dosing.
