Are Vraylar and Seroquel the Same Thing?

Vraylar (cariprazine) and Seroquel (quetiapine) are antipsychotic medications indicated for the treatment of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.

Seroquel is also used in the treatment of major depression.

Side effects of Vraylar and Seroquel that are similar include nausea, vomiting, sleepiness/drowsiness, weight gain, headache, insomnia, stomach/abdominal pain, constipation, dry mouth, and dizziness.

Side effects of Vraylar that are different from Seroquel include extrapyramidal symptoms (muscle spasms, muscle rigidity, tremor, jerking movements), agitation, indigestion, restlessness, toothache, anxiety, diarrhea, pain in the extremities, loss of appetite, back pain, and cough.

Side effects of Seroquel that are different from Vraylar include mood or behavior changes, upset stomach, lightheadedness, tiredness, sore throat, breast swelling or discharge, missed menstrual periods, and increased appetite.

Both Vraylar and Seroquel may interact with antifungal medications.

Vraylar may also interact with CYP3A4 inducers (such as rifampin and carbamazepine).

Seroquel may also interact with alcohol, steroids, cimetidine, thioridazine, lorazepam, medicines for infections, asthma medications, medications for heart problems, high blood pressure medicines, antidepressants, drugs to treat mental illness, cancer medications, malaria drugs, and HIV medications.

Side effects of Vraylar include:

  • extrapyramidal symptoms (muscle spasms, muscle rigidity, tremor, jerking movements),
  • agitation,
  • indigestion,
  • nausea,
  • vomiting,
  • sleepiness,

  • weight gain,
  • headache,
  • insomnia,
  • abdominal pain,

  • anxiety,
  • diarrhea,

  • cough.

What Is Seroquel?

Seroquel (quetiapine) is a psychotropic medication used to treat schizophrenia in adults and children who are at least 13 years old. Seroquel is also used in the treatment of major depression and bipolar disorder.

 

What Drugs Interact With Vraylar?

Vraylar may interact with CYP3A4 inducers and inhibitors. Tell your doctor all medications and supplements you use.

What Drugs Interact With Seroquel?

Seroquel may interact with other drugs that make you sleepy (cold or allergy medicine, sedatives, narcotic pain medicine, sleeping pills, muscle relaxers, and medicine for seizures or anxiety), heart or blood pressure medications, antibiotics, antidepressants, antifungal medications, HIV/AIDS medicines, migraine headache medicines, or seizure medications.

Seroquel may also interact with medications to treat Parkinson's disease, steroids, anti-malaria medications, heart rhythm medicines, and other medicines to treat psychiatric disorders.

 

How Should Vraylar Be Taken?

The starting dose of Vraylar is 1.5 mg once daily.

How Should Seroquel Be Taken?

Dosing preparations are 25, 50, 100, 200, 300, and 400 mg tablets.
