Ibuprofen and Mobic (meloxicam) are nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) used to treat pain or inflammation caused by arthritis.

A difference is ibuprofen is also used for relief of mild to moderate pain and for treatment of primary dysmenorrhea.

Mobic is available by prescription only, while ibuprofen is available over-the-counter (OTC).

Brand names for ibuprofen include Advil and Motrin.

Common side effects of Ibuprofen include:

• stomach pain,
• constipation,
• diarrhea,
• bloating,
• gas,
• heartburn,
• nausea,
• vomiting,
• dizziness,
• headache,
• nervousness,
• skin itching or rash,
• blurred vision, or
• ringing in the ears.

Other side effects of Motrin may occur. Consult your physician if you experience any possible side effects of Motrin.

Common side effects of Mobic include:

• stomach upset,
• nausea,
• drowsiness,
• diarrhea,
• bloating,
• gas,
• dizziness,
• nervousness,
• headache,
• runny or stuffy nose,
• sore throat, or
• skin rash.

Tell your doctor if less common but serious side effects of Mobic occur including:

• chest pain, weakness, shortness of breath, slurred speech, problems with vision or balance;
• black, bloody, or tarry stools;
• coughing up blood or vomit that looks like coffee grounds; or
• swelling or rapid weight gain.

Ibuprofen is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) indicated for relief of the signs and symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis, for relief of mild to moderate pain, and for treatment of primary dysmenorrhea. A generic formulation is available.

Mobic (meloxicam) is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used to treat pain or inflammation caused by arthritis.

Ibuprofen may interact with other drugs. Tell your doctor all medications and supplements you use.

Mobic may interact with lithium, diuretics (water pills), methotrexate, blood thinners, steroids, and aspirin or other NSAIDs. Mobic may also interact with cyclosporine, glyburide, and ACE inhibitors.

The recommended dose of Motrin should be adjusted to suit individual patients needs but should not exceed 3200 mg in the total daily dose. Use of alcohol and smoking could increase side effects. Safe use of Motrin for use by children has not been established. It is not known whether ibuprofen is harmful to an unborn baby.

The recommended adult starting and maintenance dose of Mobic is 7.5 mg. The maximum recommended adult daily oral dose is 15 mg.
