Myrbetriq (mirabegron) and Flomax (tamsulosin hydrochloride) are used to treat urinary problems.

Myrbetriq is used to treat overactive bladder (OAB) with symptoms of urge urinary incontinence, urgency, and urinary frequency.

Flomax is used to make it easier to urinate for patients with a prostate gland condition called BPH (benign prostatic hyperplasia).

Myrbetriq and Flomax belong to different drug classes. Myrbetriq is a beta-3 adrenergic agonist and Flomax is an alpha-blocker.

Side effects of Myrbetriq and Flomax that are similar include sore throat, diarrhea, headache, dizziness, blurred vision, or nausea.

Side effects of Myrbetriq that are different from Flomax include increased blood pressure, inability to fully empty the bladder (urinary retention), sinus pain, dry mouth, constipation, bloating, memory issues, joint pain, tired feeling, or stomach pain.

Side effects of Flomax that are different from Myrbetriq include lightheadedness, weakness, drowsiness, back pain, dental problems, sleep problems (insomnia), abnormal ejaculation, decreased sex drive, runny or stuffy nose, or cough.

Myrbetriq may interact with metoprolol, desipramine, or digoxin.

Flomax may interact with blood pressure medicines.

Common side effects of Myrbetriq include:

• fast or pounding heartbeats,
• pain or burning when you urinate,
• difficulty urinating,
• trouble emptying your bladder,
or
• dangerously high blood pressure (severe headache,
• buzzing in your ears,
• anxiety,
• confusion,
• chest pain,
• shortness of breath,
• uneven heartbeats,
• seizures).

Common side effects of Flomax include:

• dizziness,
• lightheadedness,
• weakness,
• drowsiness,
• headache,
• nausea,
• diarrhea,
• back pain,
• blurred vision,
• dental problems,
• sleep problems (insomnia),
• abnormal ejaculation,
• decreased sex drive,
• runny or stuffy nose,
• sore throat, or
• cough.

Myrbetriq may interact with metoprolol, desipramine, or digoxin.

Flomax may interact with conivaptan, imatinib, isoniazid, antibiotics, antidepressants, antifungals, heart or blood pressure medications, or HIV/AIDS medicines.

Flomax may also interact with cimetidine, cyclosporine, methimazole, pioglitazone, ropinirole, ticlopidine, warfarin, anti-malaria medications, erectile dysfunction medicines, heart rhythm medications, or medicines to treat psychiatric disorders.

Myrbetriq is available as a 10 mg tablet and a solution (30 mg per ml) for intravenous (IV) or intramuscular (IM) administration. Myrbetriq solution is administered as a single 15- to 60-mg dose once every 6 hours not to exceed 60 or 120 mg a day. The recommended oral dose is one to two Myrbetriq tablets initially followed by one tablet every 4-6 hours, not to exceed 40 mg daily. Myrbetriq should not be used for more than 5 days.

Flomax capsules 0.4 mg once daily is recommended as the dose for the treatment of the signs and symptoms of BPH and dosing should be taken by mouth, usually once daily.

• Take the first dose at bedtime to minimize the chances of getting dizzy or fainting.
• After the first dose, take your regularly scheduled dose 30 minutes after the same meal each day.
• Drug interaction and warnings include that Flomax capsules should not be used in combination with other alpha andrenergic blocking agents.
• It should not be used in combination with strong inhibitors of CYP3A4 (e.g., ketoconazole).
