Talicia vs. Biaxin

Are Biaxin and Talicia the Same Thing?

Talicia (omeprazole magnesium, amoxicillin and rifabutin) and Biaxin (clarithromycin) are used to treat Helicobacter pylori infection in adults.

Biaxin is given in combination with other medications to treat Helicobacter pylori infection. Biaxin is also prescribed for certain bacterial infections including skin and middle ear infections, tonsillitis, throat infections, laryngitis, pneumonia, and tuberculosis.

Talicia and Biaxin belong to different drug classes. Talicia is a combination of a proton pump inhibitor, a penicillin-class antibiotic, and a rifamycin antibacterial and Biaxin is a macrolide antibiotic.

Side effects of Talicia and Biaxin that are similar include diarrhea, headache, nausea, vomiting, rash, and heartburn/indigestion.

Side effects of Talicia that are different from Biaxin include abdominal pain, abnormally colored urine, mouth and throat pain, and vaginal yeast infection.

Side effects of Biaxin that are different from Talicia include upset stomach, unusual or unpleasant taste in your mouth, tooth discoloration, itching, and vaginal itching or discharge.

Both Talicia and Biaxin may interact with itraconazole, HIV medicines, drugs that weaken your immune system (such as cyclosporine or steroids), and seizure medications.

Talicia may also interact with voriconazole, St. John's wort, rifampin, fluconazole, posaconazole, clopidogrel, citalopram, cilostazol, diazepam, probenecid, allopurinol, oral anticoagulants, methotrexate, digoxin, disulfiram, and hormonal contraceptives.

Biaxin may also interact with blood thinners, colchicine, omeprazole, ranitidine, bismuth citrate, sildenafil, tadalafil, vardenafil, theophylline, tolterodine, other antibiotics, cholesterol-lowering medicines, heart medications, insulin or oral diabetes medications, sedatives.

 

What Are Possible Side Effects of Talicia?

Common side effects of Talicia include:

  • diarrhea,
  • headache,
  • nausea,
  • abdominal pain,
  • abnormally colored urine,
  • rash,
  • heartburn/indigestion,
  • mouth and throat pain,
  • vomiting, and
  • vaginal yeast infection

What Are Possible Side Effects of Biaxin?

Common side effects of Biaxin include:

  • nausea,
  • vomiting,
  • upset stomach,
  • diarrhea,
  • unusual or unpleasant taste in your mouth,
  • indigestion,
  • abdominal pain,
  • headache,
  • tooth discoloration,
  • itching or rash, or
  • vaginal itching or discharge.

Tell your doctor if you have severe liver symptoms including:

  • low fever,
  • itching,
  • upper stomach pain,
  • loss of appetite,
  • dark urine,
  • clay colored stools, or
  • yellowing the skin or eyes (jaundice).

What is Talicia?

Talicia (omeprazole magnesium, amoxicillin and rifabutin) is a three-drug combination of:

  • a proton pump inhibitor,
  • a penicillin-class antibacterial, and
  • a rifamycin antibacterial indicated for the treatment of Helicobacter pylori infection in adults.

What is Biaxin?

Biaxin (clarithromycin) is a macrolide antibiotic prescribed for certain bacterial infections including skin and middle ear infections, tonsillitis, throat infections, laryngitis, pneumonia, and tuberculosis. Biaxin is available in generic form.

 

What Drugs Interact With Talicia?

Talicia may interact with other medicines such as:

  • voriconazole,
  • St. John's wort,
  • rifampin,
  • ritonavir,
  • fluconazole,
  • posaconazole,
  • itraconazole,
  • clopidogrel,
  • citalopram,
  • cilostazol,
  • phenytoin,
  • diazepam,
  • antiretrovirals,
  • protease inhibitors,
  • probenecid,
  • allopurinol,
  • oral anticoagulants,
  • methotrexate,
  • digoxin,
  • cyclosporine,
  • disulfiram, and
  • hormonal contraceptives

What Drugs Interact With Biaxin?

Biaxin may interact with blood thinners, cyclosporine, other antibiotics, theophylline, cholesterol-lowering medicines, heart medications, HIV medicines, sedatives or seizure medicines.

Biaxin may also interact with colchicine, itraconazole, omeprazole, ranitidine, bismuth citrate, sildenafil, tadalafil, vardenafil, tolterodine, steroids, or insulin or oral diabetes medications.

 

How Should Talicia Be Taken?

The dosage of Talicia is four (4) capsules every 8 hours with food for 14 days.

How Should Biaxin Be Taken?

Biaxin adult dose is 250mg to 500mg twice daily or 1000mg once daily (extended release) and dosage in children is based on the weight.
