Reyvow vs. Imitrex

Are Reyvow and Imitrex the Same Thing?

Reyvow (lasmiditan) and Imitrex (sumatriptan) are different types of selective serotonin receptor agonists used for the acute treatment of migraine headaches.

Reyvow is not indicated for the preventive treatment of migraine.

Reyvow is a type of migraine medicine called a ditan, while Imitrex is a triptan.

Side effects of Reyvow and Imitrex that are similar include dizziness, sedation/drowsiness, nausea, and vomiting.

Side effects of Reyvow that are different from Imitrex include fatigue and numbness and tingling.

Side effects of Imitrex that are different from Reyvow include mild headache (not a migraine), pain or chest tightness, pressure or heavy feeling in any part of your body, weakness, feeling hot or cold, spinning sensation, drooling, unusual taste in your mouth after using nasal spray, burning/numbness/pain/irritation in your nose or throat after using nasal spray, and flushing (warmth, redness, or tingling under the skin).

Both Reyvow and Imitrex may interact with antidepressants.

Reyvow may also interact with alcohol or other CNS depressants, MAO inhibitors, trazodone, dextromethorphan, St. John's wort, and medications that lower heart rate, and P-gp or BCRP substrates.

Imitrex may also interact with other migraine headache medicines, medicines to treat psychiatric disorders, medicines for Parkinson's disease, medicine for serious infections, herbal products, stimulants, opioids, and medicines to prevent nausea and vomiting.

Common side effects of Reyvow include:

  • dizziness,
  • fatigue,
  • numbness and tingling,
  • sedation,
  • nausea, and
  • vomiting

Common side effects of Imitrex include:

  • mild headache (not a migraine),
  • pain or chest tightness,
  • pressure or heavy feeling in any part of your body,

  • nausea,
  • vomiting,
  • drooling,

What Is Reyvow?

Reyvow (lasmiditan) is a serotonin (5-HT) 1F receptor agonist indicated for the acute treatment of migraine with or without aura in adults. Reyvow is not indicated for the preventive treatment of migraine.

What Is Imitrex?

Imitrex (sumatriptan) is a selective serotonin receptor agonist used in oral, intranasal or injectable dosage form to treat migraine headaches. Imitrex is available as a generic drug.

 

What Drugs Interact With Reyvow?

Reyvow may interact with:

  • alcohol or other CNS depressants,
  • antidepressants,
  • MAO inhibitors,
  • trazodone,
  • dextromethorphan,
  • St. John's wort,
  • medications that lower heart rate, and
  • P-gp or BCRP substrates

What Drugs Interact With Imitrex?

Imitrex may interact with sibutramine (Meridia); monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) isocarboxazid (Marplan); selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, fluoxetine (Prozac) and sertraline (Zoloft), serotonin; norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors, venlafaxine (Effexor)) and duloxetine (Cymbalta); and ergot-containing medications, dihydroergotamine (Migranal) and ergotamine (Methergine).

 

How Should Reyvow Be Taken?

The recommended dose of Reyvow is 50 mg, 100 mg, or 200 mg taken orally, as needed. No more than one dose of Reyvow should be taken in 24 hours.

How Should Imitrex Be Taken?

The maximum single recommended adult dose of Imitrex Injection for the acute treatment of migraine or cluster headache is 6 mg injected subcutaneously. For the treatment of migraine, if side effects are dose limiting, lower doses (1 mg to 5 mg) of Imitrex may be used.
