Oxbryta vs. Endari

Oxbryta (voxelotor) and Endari (L-glutamine oral powder) are used to treat sickle cell disease.

Oxbryta is used to treat sickle cell disease in adults and pediatric patients 12 years of age and older and Endari is used to reduce the acute complications of sickle cell disease in adult and pediatric patients 5 years of age and older.

Oxbryta and Endari belong to different drug classes. Oxbryta is a hemoglobin S polymerization inhibitor and Endari is an amino acid.

Side effects of Oxbryta and Endari that are similar include headache, nausea, and stomach/abdominal pain.

Side effects of Oxbryta that are different from Endari include diarrhea, tiredness/fatigue, rash, and fever.

Side effects of Endari that are different from Oxbryta include constipation, cough, pain in extremities, back pain, chest pain, indigestion, burning sensation, and hot flashes.

Oxbryta may interact with strong CYP3A4 inhibitors, fluconazole, strong or moderate CYP3A4 inducers, and midazolam.

Endari may interact with other drugs.

The recommended dosage of Oxbryta is 1,500 mg orally once daily with or without food.

The dose of Endari is 5 to 15 grams orally, twice daily based on body weight. Each dose of Endari should be mixed in 8 oz. (240 mL) of cold or room temperature beverage or 4 to 6 oz. of food before ingestion.
