Are Daytrana and Trazodone the Same Thing?
Daytrana (methylphenidate) and trazodone are used to treat different attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms.
Daytrana is used as a primary treatment for ADHD, and trazodone may be used to treat insomnia that may accompany ADHD.
Trazodone is used to treat depression and insomnia.
Daytrana and trazodone belong to different drug classes. Daytrana is a central nervous system stimulant and Trazodone is an antidepressant.
Side effects of Daytrana and trazodone that are similar include headache, changes in weight, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, vision problems/blurred vision, stuffy nose, dry mouth, constipation, and drowsiness.
Side effects of Daytrana that are different from trazodone include local skin reactions (mild redness, irritation, or bumps on the skin under the patch), stomach pain, loss of appetite, trouble sleeping (insomnia), lightheadedness, irritability, nervousness, sore throat, blue fingers or toes, and cold hands or feet.
Side effects of trazodone that are different from Daytrana include diarrhea, tiredness, muscle aches/pains, bad taste in the mouth, and change in sexual interest/ability.
Both Daytrana and trazodone may interact with blood thinners and seizure medicines.
Daytrana may also interact with blood pressure medications, clonidine, and antidepressants.
Trazodone may also interact with HIV medicines, antifungal medications, digoxin, and monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs).
Withdrawal symptoms may occur if you suddenly stop using Daytrana.
What Are Possible Side Effects of Daytrana?
Side effects of Daytrana include:

This will usually improve even if the patch is left on. Other side effects of Daytrana include:
- headache,
- stomach pain,
- loss of appetite,
- weight loss,
- trouble sleeping (insomnia),
- dizziness,

- vomiting,
- lightheadedness,
- vision problems,
- irritability,
- nervousness,
- stuffy nose,
- sore throat,
- dry mouth,
- constipation,
- blue fingers or toes,
- cold hands or feet, or
- (rarely) drowsiness.
Daytrana may raise your blood pressure. Check your blood pressure regularly and tell your doctor if the results are high. Tell your doctor if you have serious side effects of Daytrana including:
- numbness/pain/skin color change/sensitivity to temperature in the fingers or toes,
- fast/pounding/irregular heartbeat,
- mental/mood/behavior changes (such as agitation, aggression, mood swings, abnormal thoughts, thoughts of suicide),
- uncontrolled muscle movements (such as twitching, shaking),
- sudden outbursts of words or sounds that are hard to control, or
- slow healing sores or ulcers on the tips of fingers or toes.
What Are Possible Side Effects of Trazodone?
Side effects of Trazodone include:
- extreme mood swings,
- restlessness,
- sleep problems,
- dizziness,
- fainting,
- fast or pounding heartbeat,
- easy bruising or bleeding,
- agitation,
- hallucinations,
- fast heart rate,
- overactive reflexes,
- diarrhea,
- loss of coordination,
- very stiff (rigid) muscles,
- high fever,
- confusion,
- fast or uneven heartbeats,
- tremors,
- trouble concentrating,
- memory problems,
- weakness,
- loss of appetite,
- unsteadiness,
- seizures,
- shallow breathing or breathing that stops,
- chest pain or heavy feeling,
- pain spreading to the arm or shoulder,
- nausea,
- sweating, or
- general ill feeling (malaise).

What Is Trazodone?
Trazodone is a triazolopyridine antidepressant used to treat major depressive disorder (MDD) in adults.
What Drugs Interact With Daytrana?
Daytrana may interact with:
- blood pressure medications,
- blood thinners,
- clonidine,
- seizure medicines, or
- antidepressants
Tell your doctor all medications you use.
What Drugs Interact With Trazodone?
Trazodone may interact with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), alcohol, barbiturates, other CNS depressants, ritonavir, ketoconazole, indinavir, itraconazole, carbamazepine, digoxin, phenytoin, serotonergic drugs, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), aspirin, other drugs affecting coagulation or bleeding, or warfarin. Tell your doctor all medications you use. During pregnancy, Oleptro should be used only if prescribed. This medication may be passed in breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.
How Should Daytrana Be Taken?
Daytrana patch should be applied to the hip area 2 hours before an effect is needed and should be removed 9 hours after application. Dose titration, final dosage, and wear time is individualized to the needs and response of the patient.
How Should Trazodone Be Taken?
The recommended starting dose of Trazodone is 150 mg once daily in adults. The dose may be increased by 75 mg/day every three days (i.e., start 225 mg on Day 4 of therapy). The maximum daily dose should not exceed 375 mg.
