Amerge vs. Sumavel, Onzetra, Zembrace

Amerge (naratriptan) and Sumavel DosePro, Onzetra, and Zembrace (sumatriptan) are headache medicines ("triptans") used to treat migraine headaches.

Sumavel DosePro, Onzetra, and Zembrace are also used to treat cluster headaches.

Amerge will only treat a headache that has already begun. Amerge will not prevent headaches or reduce the number of attacks.

Side effects of Amerge and Sumavel DosePro, Onzetra, and Zembrace that are similar include flushing (warmth, redness, or tingling), sensations of tingling/numbness/prickling/heat/warmth under your skin, weakness, drowsiness, dizziness, and pressure or heavy feeling in any part of your body.

Side effects of Amerge that are different from Sumavel DosePro, Onzetra, and Zembrace include tired feeling.

Side effects of Sumavel DosePro, Onzetra, and Zembrace that are different from Amerge include injection site reactions (pain, swelling, bruising, redness, or bleeding), spinning sensation, mild headache (not a migraine), discomfort in your nose or throat, muscle pain, and neck pain or stiffness.

Both Amerge and Sumavel DosePro, Onzetra, and Zembrace may interact with other migraine headache medicines, antidepressants, medicine to treat a psychiatric disorder, narcotics (opioids), and medicines to prevent nausea and vomiting.

Sumavel DosePro, Onzetra, and Zembrace may also interact with medicines for Parkinson's disease, medicines for serious infections, some herbal products, and stimulants.

Common side effects of Amerge include:

• flushing,
• sensations of tingling/numbness/prickling/heat/warmth under your skin,
• weakness,
• drowsiness,
• tired feeling,
• dizziness, or
• pressure or heavy feeling in any part of your body

• sensations of numbness/prickling/heat,
• weakness,
• drowsiness,
• dizziness,
• spinning sensation,
• mild headache (not a migraine),
• pressure or heavy feeling in any part of your body,
• discomfort in your nose or throat,
• muscle pain, or
• neck pain or stiffness

Sumavel DosePro, Onzetra Xsail, and Zembrace SymTouch are different brand names of the generic drug sumatriptan. Sumatriptan is a triptan, a type of medication used to treat migraines and cluster headaches.

Amerge may interact with other migraine headache medicines, or antidepressants. Tell your doctor all medications you use. Amerge should be used only when prescribed during pregnancy. It is unknown if this drug passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.

The dosage of Amerge is 25 mg four times a day.

The dose of Sumavel, Onzetra, Zembrace is 1 spray in each nostril followed in 15 minutes by an additional spray in each nostril, for a total of 4 sprays.
