Cimzia vs. Hadlima

Are Cimzia and Hadlima the Same Thing?

Cimzia (certolizumab pegol) and Hadlima (adalimumab-bwwd) are tumor necrosis factor (TNF) blockers used to treat Crohn's disease (CD).

Hadlima is also used to treat rheumatoid arthritis (RA), juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA), psoriatic arthritis (PsA), ankylosing spondylitis (AS), ulcerative colitis (UC), and plaque psoriasis (Ps).

Hadlima is biosimilar to Humira (adalimumab).

Side effects of Cimzia and Hadlima that are similar include headache, infections (e.g. upper respiratory tract, sinusitis), injection site reactions (redness, itching, bleeding, pain, and swelling), and rash.

Side effects of Cimzia that are different from Hadlima include stuffy nose, sinus pain, stomach pain, diarrhea, constipation, and urinary tract infections (UTIs).

Both Hadlima and Cimzia may interact with abatacept, anakinra, and live vaccines.

Cimzia may also interact with natalizumab, rituximab, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), and other drugs that weaken your immune system (such as cancer medicine, methotrexate, or steroids).

Hadlima may also interact with warfarin, cyclosporine, and theophylline.

What Are Possible Side Effects of Cimzia?

Side effects of Cimzia include:

  • stuffy nose,
  • sinus pain,
  • stomach pain,
  • diarrhea,
  • constipation,
  • injection site reactions (pain, redness, itching, swelling, or bleeding),
  • upper respiratory infections (flu, cold),
  • rash, and
  • urinary tract infections.

Serious side effects of Cimzia include:

Tell your doctor if you develop signs of infection while using Cimzia, such as fever, chills, persistent sore throat, persistent cough, night sweats, trouble breathing, painful/frequent urination, unusual vaginal discharge, or white patches in the mouth (oral thrush).

What Are Possible Side Effects of Hadlima?

Common side effects of Hadlima include:

  • infections (e.g. upper respiratory tract, sinusitis),
  • injection site reactions (redness, itching, bleeding, pain, and swelling),
  • headache, and
  • rash

Hadlima (adalimumab-bwwd) is a tumor necrosis factor (TNF) blocker indicated for treatment of rheumatoid Arthritis (RA), juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA), psoriatic arthritis (PsA), ankylosing spondylitis (AS), adult Crohn's disease (CD), ulcerative colitis (UC), and plaque psoriasis (Ps). Hadlima is biosimilar to Humira (adalimumab).

 

What Drugs Interact With Cimzia?

Cimzia may interact with abatacept, anakinra, natalizumab, rituximab, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), or other drugs that weaken your immune system (such as cancer medicine, methotrexate, or steroids). Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment with Cimzia; it is not expected to be harmful to a fetus. It is unknown if Cimzia passes into breast milk or if it could harm a nursing baby. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.

What Drugs Interact With Hadlima?

Hadlima may interact with abatacept, anakinra, warfarin, cyclosporine, theophylline, and live vaccines.

 

How Should Cimzia Be Taken?

Cimzia is given by injection under the skin, in the stomach or thigh area, as directed by your doctor. Follow your doctor's directions and the schedule for your doses very carefully.

How Should Hadlima Be Taken?

The recommended dose of Hadlima for adult patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), psoriatic arthritis (PsA), or ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is 40 mg every other week. Pediatric dosage is determined by the child's weight. Dosing for other conditions varies.
