Definition of Visceral Myopathy

Visceral myopathy is one of a group of conditions that affects the smooth muscle of the internal organs, such as the intestinal tract, bladder, or uterus. Visceral myopathy impairs the ability of the muscle in these organs to do its job in ensuring organ function and typically affects hollow organs that require smooth muscle function. The condition can prevent efficient movement of air and nutrients through the bowel, prevent effective bladder emptying, and impair normal uterine contraction and relaxation, particularly during pregnancy. The condition varies in severity among affected people.
