Type 3b diabetes: a term used to describe a type of secondary diabetes. Type 3b diabetes refers to diabetes that occurs as a result of diseases of the exocrine pancreas (the part of the pancreas that produces digestive enzymes, not the part that produces insulin). Examples of these conditions include pancreatitis, surgical removal of the pancreas, trauma to the pancreas, pancreatic tumors, cystic fibrosis, hemochromatosis, and other forms of damage to the pancreas. Type 3c diabetes is estimated to be responsible for about 5%-10% of all cases of diabetes in Western populations.
