Definition of Small-Incision Lenticule Extraction (SMILE)

Small-Incision Lenticule Extraction (SMILE) is a newer type of laser surgery performed on the eye to correct vision defects. This kind of surgery treats myopia (nearsightedness) and astigmatism (irregularly shaped cornea). With the SMILE procedure, a laser is used to change the shape of the cornea, the outer part of the eye, improving the focus of light on the retina. Unlike LASIK procedures, this procedure does not involve cutting a flap in the cornea. People with certain medical conditions or eye conditions may not be appropriate candidates for the SMILE procedure.
