Scleral buckle is a type of surgical procedure on the eye used to correct a detached retina. To correct a detached retina, the surgeon opens the eye and uses a procedure to seal the detached retina back together. With scleral buckling, a substance such as sponge, rubber, or plastic is stitched to the outside of the eye (the sclera, or the white of the eye) to ensure that the repaired retina stays in place. The scleral buckle is usually left in place permanently.
