Definition of Reactive Attachment Disorder (RAD)
Medically reviewed by Min Clinic Staff | Updated: January 2026
Reactive attachment disorder is a rare condition in which a young child does not achieve an emotional bond with caretakers (parental figures). The condition is most common in children from 9 months to 5 years of age who suffered neglect or maltreatment as a young child. Having spent time with many different caretakers or living in an orphanage can also predispose a child to develop RAD. Symptoms include failure to show appropriate emotion, avoiding touch and eye contact, irritability, tantrums, anger, disobedience, and inappropriate affection toward strangers.
