Definition of Moebius Syndrome

Moebius syndrome: This rare neurologic disorder results in facial paralysis and is associated with facial abnormalities, including small chin and mouth, cleft palate, and missing teeth. The facial paralysis leads to an inability to form expressions with the facial muscles. The exact cause of Moebius syndrome (Möbius syndrome) is not known, but environmental and genetic factors seem to play a role. There is a higher incidence of Moebius syndrome in the children of women who abused drugs, including cocaine, during their pregnancy. Treatment is supportive and directed at relief of symptoms.
