Definition of Pars Plana Vitrectomy

Pars plana vitrectomy is a type of microsurgical technique performed on the eye that enables surgeons to carry out a number of different surgical procedures involving the back portion of the eye. In this procedure, the vitreous gel that fills the back of the eye is removed, allowing surgeons to perform surgery on the retina or posterior region of the eye.
The conditions that can be treated with pars plana vitrectomy surgery include retinal detachment, macular hole, foreign body in the eye, giant retinal tears, eye trauma, and endophthalmitis.
