Definition of Hyperdontia

Hyperdontia: the presence of extra (supernumerary) teeth. Hyperdontia can be associated with developmental abnormalities such as cleft lip and/or palate, Gardner syndrome, and cleidocranial dysplasia. Hyperdontia may lead to problems with alignment of the bite (malocclusion) and the formation of dentigerous cysts. Extra teeth may also become impacted and lead to damage to the root of an adjacent tooth.
